Who runs it
My Pizza Calculator is built and maintained by Derrick Austin, a web developer who orders pizza for youth sports teams and church events. Those orders are where the question keeps coming up. Guess low and the last kids in line get nothing. Guess high and you drive home with six boxes nobody wanted.
Most calculators he tried gave a single number with no way to account for who was eating or what toppings the group wanted. So he built one that does both and put it online for anyone planning the same kind of order.
How the numbers are worked out
Everything on the site uses one set of assumptions, so the calculator, the FAQ, and every guide agree with each other.
- Slices per person: 2 for young kids, 2.5 for light eaters or a table full of sides, 3 for average adults, and 4 for teenagers, athletes, or any group where pizza is the only food.
- Slices per pizza: 6 in a 12 inch medium, 8 in a 14 inch large, and 10 in a 16 inch extra-large.
- Rounding: the total is always rounded up to a whole pizza.
- Topping split: each topping gets its exact share, everyone is rounded down, and the leftover pizzas go to the toppings closest to earning one. The split always adds up to the total.
These are planning defaults, not rules. Local pizzerias cut and size pizzas differently, and you know your crowd better than any calculator does. The calculator lets you change any of these numbers.
How the guides are written
The guides answer the questions people ask while planning an order, and each one starts with the answer. Quantities in the guides come from the same formula as the calculator. Charts inside guides are generated from that formula instead of being typed by hand, so they cannot drift out of date.
When a guide makes a specific factual claim, such as a food safety guideline or a pizzeria chain's menu details, it links to the source. Each guide shows when it was first published and when it was last updated.
How the site is paid for
The calculator and every guide are free, with no account required. The site is supported by advertising through Google AdSense, by optional tips, and by a few affiliate links. The site earns a commission if you buy through an affiliate link, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate, My Pizza Calculator earns from qualifying purchases. Ads and affiliate partners never change the numbers, and no pizzeria pays to be mentioned. Settings you enter in the calculator stay in your own browser. The privacy policy explains the cookies used by advertising and affiliate links.
